How is Play Therapy Used?

What is Play Therapy?

Play Therapy is effective at alleviating chronic, mild and moderate psychological and emotional conditions in children.

We use this form of therapy with very young children, who may not be able to express their feelings and fears verbally. We will engage your child in games and pretending(role play), using dolls and other toys, since play is a way for children to communicate. Through gentle probing, we will try to draw your child out. In this way, your child may be able to act out feelings and reveal deep-seated emotional trauma.  We will focus on enhancing communication and attunement between the child and parent and will include the parent in the therapy build attachment relationships and enhance communication and attunement between parents and children. These therapists will also recognize the influence of previous family systems in which the child may have lived or has a connection to (e.g., birth or foster families).

Play therapy can be used in conjunction with Trauma-Focused CBT.
